About Binalong Bay
The beautiful coastal village of Binalong Bay is located just 10 km from St Helens and boasts a well-equipped scuba diving centre, for all your ‘scuba’ and other water related sporting needs. Surrounded by several national parks, bushwalking, bird watching and beachcombing are also easily catered for. Other activites are golf, bowls, tennis, cycling, horse riding, moto-cross riding and four wheel driving.
St Helens is the largest town on Tasmania’s east coast, with a permanent population of approximately 3,500 people, and is the gateway to the famous beaches of the ‘Bay of Fires’ coastal strip. The population expands to around 25,000 people during the busy summer months. This is, after all, Tasmania’s 'sunshine coast'.
St Helens is also home to the largest commercial fishing fleet on the east coast. At the busy wharf area you will see crayfish (southern rock lobster), abalone and deep sea fishing boats coming and going anytime during the day and night. It has a comprehensive range of commercial and retail businesses, including hardware and whitegoods stores, service stations, clothing, footwear and sporting shops, supermarkets, hotels, galleries, cafes, wine bars, a cinema, and much more. There is also a permanently manned police station, a small hospital and modern medical centre in town.
St Helens is situated on picturesque Georges Bay and has excellent facilities for boating and fishing. A visit to St Helens visitor information centre (whilst there, visit the excellent museum) can help you to organise any of the interesting activities on offer within the region.
