About Derby

Derby is a small village set on the beautiful Ringarooma River in the North East of Tasmania, which has a population of around 150 residents so you are far away from the 'madding crowd'. The countryside abounds with a beautiful array of spring flowers from late August and all the colours of autumn leaves in late March. Late October you will witness a colourful display of irises and rhododendrons everywhere and fields of cornflower blue forget-me-nots. There is always a cheerful note from the many varieties of birds in the area.

Activities :
Discover Derby's tin mining history, try river fishing and fly/trout fishing at a nearby stocked club dam (small membership fee to cover costs). Play golf 15 mins away at Moorina ($10 green fees). Beaches are less than an hour away. Explore Mt William National Park near Gladstone, approx half an hour's drive from Derby. Fossick in our river and neighbouring rivers for gemstones. Enjoy bush walks or a barbecue in the park on the riverbank in Derby or down in the lovely Mutual Valley only a few minutes' drive away. Visit one of the largest private organic seed saving operations in Australia March through to June, and see their planting operations in September. One day workshops on sustainable living, crafts etc. Guided bush walks also available. Enjoy the visits from local wild life - echidna, possum, wallaby, paddymelon, kangaroo, rabbit and, if you are lucky, you may see a wombat or platypus. Lakes nearby for water skiing/boating at Pioneer. Explore the Myrtle and rain forests near Weldborough, only half an hour's drive away.
