About Port Arthur
Home to Port Arthur Historic Site. Most outsatnding coastline in Australia : highest seacliffs, secluded beaches, historic sites, abundent sealife, wonderful wilderness, boat cruises, in the heart of Tasman National Park.
Eaglehawk Neck
Discover the spectacular coastal scenery along some of the highest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere with views that are unsurpassed on the walk to Waterfall Bay, the natural wonders of the Tessellated Pavement, Tasman's Arch, the Blowhole and Devils Kitchen. Then take a journey into the past as you explore the location of Eaglehawk Neck's infamous Dogline. A fifteen minute drive takes you to the nation's most significant historic site, the penal settlement of Port Arthur.
Steeped in natural beauty and convict history, yet only 1 hour's drive from Hobart Eaglehawk Neck, at the entrance to the Tasman Peninsula, is the perfect place to base your journey. Experience the wild coastline, seal colonies, towering cliffs, temperate rain forests and pristine beaches from a sea charter, along spectacular walking tracks or from the comfort of your vehicle.
Eaglehawk Neck Cafe is open for lunch, morning and afternoon tea, dinner in summer and also features regular music in summer.
Saltwater River
Located 106 km south east of Hobart and 23 km from Port Arthur, there is little doubt that Saltwater River is the hidden treasure of the Tasman Peninsula. It is certainly as interesting as Port Arthur and, given that it is common to visit the ruins and be on your own for hours (something which never occurs at Port Arthur), it has a sense of desolation and isolation which makes the experience powerful and poignant.
Two penal outstations were established at Saltwater River. The first, which was a rather pleasant option, was an agricultural farm supplying food for Port Arthur and other outstations on the Peninsula. The Convict Beach House is part of this historic site. The second, the coal mine, was widely regarded as 'hell on earth'.
The Historic Coal Mines Site is a FREE entry site, open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day – don’t miss it!
Taranna
Taranna is central to all tourist attractions and activities available on the Tasman Peninsula. Spectacular coastline, featuring the highest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere, and bush walks through pristine wilderness. Eco boat cruises, kayaking, horse riding, deep sea fishing or a round of golf - all accessible within a 10 km radius of the Taranna township. Visitors should allow a two day stay, to ensure they have time to take in the magic of the Tasman Peninsula.
White Beach
White Beach is situated on the southern tip of the Tasman Peninsula, one hour from Hobart International Airport and 10 minutes from historic Port Arthur. Besides being famous for its historic sights, the Tasman Peninsula is renowned for its unspoilt natural beauty. Described as ‘a world of its own’ and the ‘the undiscovered part of Tasmania’, the peninsula has many activities that are all close to White Beach.
Sailing: Calm sailing in Parson’s Bay or ocean sailing in Storm Bay.
Fishing: Either from the beach at White beach (one minute’s walk) or by boat from the boat ramp (one minute’s drive). Deep sea fishing charter is available and the Tasman Peninsula holds many world records for tuna and other deep water species.
Surfing: Available at Roaring Beach, ten minutes drive from Storm Bay. Or for the brave, the incredible waves at Shipstern Bluff which is easily accessible from White Beach boat ramp or a two hour hike from the Stormlea area.
Golf: Available at the Tasman golf course, a beautiful course that runs along the coast five minutes from Port Arthur.
Bushwalking: Some of the best bushwalking in Tasmania is had on the Tasman Peninsula. Storm Bay is situated on the edge of a National Forest and you can walk to Cape Raol, Cape Hauy and Cape Pillar that have the highest sea cliffs in the Southern hemisphere. The Tasmanian government is implementing a National Parks four day walk from Pirates Bay to White Beach.
Ocean adventure cruises: Half day cruises available from Pirates Bay.
Diving: World class diving from Eaglehawk Neck.
Horse riding: Available nearby; beach and forest riding.
