Tasmania travel information
Tasmania is an island state, so there are only two ways to travel here - by air or by sea. This brief guide may help you, if you are new to Tasmania.
Travel to Tasmania by air
There are flights between Tasmania and mainland Australia daily. Tasmania has two major airports, at Hobart and Launceston, with smaller facilities at Burnie and Devonport which mainly service local flights.
Virgin Blue and Jetstar Airways operate several flights a day between Melbourne and both Hobart and Launceston airports and, less frequently, to and from Sydney. Check for low cost specials; cheap, no frills flights make travel to Tasmania by air very attractive, especially outside peak season (high summer).
Hobart Airport and Launceston Airport are shown on our Google map, so if you are flying in you can see exactly where you will land.
Take the ferry to Tasmania
The very comfortable ferry Spirit of Tasmania travels overnight between Melbourne and Devonport on a daily basis for most of the year, with some no-sailing days in winter. Twice-daily ferries operate in the high season, so you can travel either overnight or during the day.
The ferry terminal is shown on our Google map, so if you are arriving by ferry you can see exactly where you will land.
Hire vehicles in Tasmania
Most of the major hire car companies operate in Tasmania and there are pick up and drop off points all over the island. Vroom Vroom Vroom offers excellent deals across the whole range of car rental options.
For the adventurous, there are motorcycles available for rental - for city exploration and for guided or self-guided tours of Tasmania. Hobart-based Moto Adventure Tasmania has late model, quality motorbikes for hire, including helmets and everything you need for a unique tour of the island.
